Comprehensive Brain Concussion Diagnosis & Treatment in North Vancouver

At our naturopathic concussion clinic, we use functional medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of concussion and its related sequelae, such as ADHD and brain fog. We use electroencephalograms (qEEG) and Impact testing for the diagnosis of the extent of traumatic brain injury. We then used targeted treatments, such as IV NAD+, Photo modulation and Pulsed EMF therapy to facilitate speedy recovery.

Concussion Treatment Starts with Proper Diagnosis and Testing

Concussion Testing

North Vancouver Concussion Testing

The symptoms of a concussion can result from inflammation of the brain, ocular, and vestibular nerves, leading to congestion of blood flow and subsequent experience of acute pain, and loss of cognitive function. Additionally, injury to the neck structures can lead to chronic muscle guarding, further burdening the injury. Sometimes, the gastrointestinal tract and hormone regulation are affected after a concussion. Therefore, concussion testing needs to include both the physical and neurological systems.

The symptoms of concussion can be there, however, without other signs on MRI or conventional imaging techniques.  Thanks to a new technology now offered at our Northshore Naturopathic Clinic, our patients have new hope. The technology is called Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG). It can be used not only to diagnose the concussion but also to guide the proper treatment of head injuries.

Treating Head Injuries

 North Vancouver Concussion Clinic

We use comprehensive, personalized testing first to assess and quantify post-concussive changes. The first step is to use a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) to identify the brain’s spontaneous electrical activity related to a concussion. This analysis enables us to view dynamic changes post-concussion. Additionally, we use visual, vestibular, cognitive and functional hormone testing as indicated to correct after-effects of concussion.

The qEEG, combined with a robust neurofeedback training program, can then be used to augment brain activity, help alleviate symptoms, and achieve sustained improvements. IV therapies to address brain inflammation, nutritional support to facilitate brain healing, and techniques such as Bowen therapy to address the physical guarding of the neck and shoulders can naturally bring lasting changes.

Facts

Concussion facts

Head injuries are common. About 20% of individuals experience one or more in their lifetimes. A loss of consciousness after a blow to the head usually means a concussion.

But not all head injury comes with a loss of consciousness. In fact, all too often, Traumatic brain injury without a loss of consciousness can rattle the brain enough to lead to long-term problems affecting the motor, cognitive and emotional capacity. The condition is called Post-Concussion Syndrome.

The simple fact remains that each concusison predisposes the individual to yet another one. And individuals with a history of concussion are more likely to receive a psychological diagnosis, such as ADHDdepression, or experience permanent changes in cognitive capacity.

Symptoms

Post Concussion Symtoms

Some symptoms of post-concussion syndrome show up immediately. Others may be delayed for days and remain for months to years after injury.

  • Chronic headaches or pressure in the head
  • Confusion, short-term memory loss or brain fog
  • Fatigue and loss of cognitive capacity
  • Problem falling or staying asleep
  • Loss of balance or Dizziness
  • Sensitivity to light and noise, or ringing in the ears
  • Changed in Attention mimicking ADD, and ADHD
  • Mood changes, loss of emotional control, and anger
  • Psychological adjustment problems, such as depression or anxiety

At the core of our care for the diagnosis and treatment of Concussion and Post-Concussive Syndrome, we rely on objective assessment of the brain with Quantitative Electroencephalogram recording (qEEG).

Concussion treatment requires an integrative approach that addresses the brain neurology, hormonal balance, and the musculoskeletal system.

A mind + body approach is the key to healing.

As a physician I make a point to strive for excellence in my field and compassion in my daily life.

I chose to be a naturopathic doctor because I believe integrating the current medicine along with the natural treatments is essential for true mind-body medicine.
A little about me
My work in brain health and concussion recovery started early in my career. In 1996, I began in mental health research as a student at the Toronto Center for Mental Health, and later completed an internship at the Hospital for Sick Children, supporting genetics research related to acquired mental health conditions. That foundation gave me a deep respect for how complex the brain and nervous system are—and how important it is to treat the whole person, not just symptoms.
As I trained at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM), I became especially drawn to therapies that support the nervous system, including orthomolecular medicine (targeted nutrients) and homeopathic medicine. While they approach healing from very different angles, I’ve found they can be highly complementary—particularly for people dealing with post-concussion symptoms, nervous system dysregulation, sleep disruption, headaches, mood changes, and cognitive fatigue.
Today, with over a decade in clinical practice using naturopathic and integrative mind-body approaches, I focus on helping patients who are navigating concussion and persistent post-concussion symptoms. My goal is to support your recovery with a thoughtful, individualized plan that addresses the underlying drivers—so you can return to clearer thinking, steadier energy, and a more resilient nervous system.
