Autism + Naturopathic Medicine

June 18, 2015

At our naturopathic clinic in North Vancouver, we are dedicated to helping families with integrative naturopathic and biomedical treatments to autism. This means we use the latest from the scientific findings to help reduce the risk of autism during the prenatal period. And to improve the outcomes of autism, autism spectrum disorders, and their related Gut and Immune dysfunction after birth and during brain development.

Consider the follwing facts :

  1. Depending on the methods of data collection 1 in 88 to 1 in 100 children are now diagnosed with autism. Boys 3-4 times more likely to receive this diagnosis than girls. The statistics are on the rise, and no single causation is known.
  2. Mounting evidence is showing that Austims Spectrum Disorders, like other developmental disorders, are multi system in nature. The involvement of Genetics, Immune system dysfunction, Toxins and heavy metals, Impaired detoxification pathways in the body, Excess inflammation, food sensitivities and allergies, and gastrointestinal disease, are some of the findings that have challenged the long held beliefs about the disease.

  3. Risk of disease and diagnosis is corelated withearly prenatal viral infecitons, and undiagnosed fungal exposures.
  4. In utero exposure to both SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorders.
  5. More and more evidence show the presence of inflammatory reactions in the central nervous system. A recently published study for example, links mitochondrial abnormalities in a subset of individuals with autism with impaired ability to manage oxidative stress.

Considering these facts, while biomedical treatment is not considered mainstream treatment for Autism and ASD, the staggering amount of research shows that it is only prudent for it to be considred and refered to by be any carefully examining clinicians.

At our North Vancouver clinic our naturopathic Autism treatments focus on:
Improving the Diet.
Identifying and removing food allergens.
Use of vitamins and minerals based on individual and genetic needs. Correcting gastrointestinal and immune system imbalances.
Training the developing mind towards enhanced learning and cognitive power using neurofeedback.
